Bye-Bye Diapers, Hello Independence! – The Niño & Niña Way of Toilet Training

At Niño & Niña Preschool, we believe that toilet training is not just about teaching a child to use the washroom, it’s about building confidence, independence, and trust between a child and their caregivers. That’s why we proudly call ourselves a diaper-free school. And no, that’s not just a bold statement, it’s a beautiful journey we walk hand-in-hand with our children and their parents.

Now, we know the idea of weaning off the diaper can send chills down a parent’s spine—visions of accidents, piles of laundry, and awkward mall meltdowns. But trust us when we say: it’s all worth it. And more importantly, it’s possible, when done with love, patience and consistency.

So why are we so passionate about ditching the diaper?

When a child begins to recognize their own body cues and takes responsibility, even in the tiniest way, they begin to take pride in their achievements. It boosts self-esteem, strengthens routines and allows smoother integration into structured environments, like formal schools.

Here’s how we do it the Niño & Niña way:

1. Child-Friendly Toilets That Don’t Intimidate

Our washrooms are designed keeping our little learners in mind. Low-height child-friendly commodes, easy flush systems and cheerful spaces ensure that the bathroom doesn’t feel like a scary cave but rather a space they can navigate with comfort and ease.

2. Washroom Breaks on a Clock

We don’t wait for accidents, we prevent them! Children are taken to the washroom at regular intervals throughout the day, especially after meals, snacks and playtime. These routines help create familiarity and gradually train the body and mind to sync up.

3. Encouragement for Every Drop

Whether it’s a successful attempt or just a sit-and-try, we clap, cheer and encourage. Because sometimes, all it takes is a little “Yay, you did it!” to make them want to try again. Children thrive on appreciation, and in our classrooms, no effort goes unnoticed.

4. Conversations with Parents—A Two-Way Street

We constantly communicate with parents to reinforce the idea of diaper-free routines at home too. One of the biggest setbacks we see is when a child is diaper-free at school but made to wear one at home “just to avoid a mess.” This confuses the child, disrupts consistency, and delays the training. Toilet training is a team effort, and we make sure parents feel supported—not pressured—throughout.

5. Celebrating the Accidents Too !

Yes, you read that right. Because accidents mean they are trying. No shaming, no scolding, just gentle clean-ups and reminders. We keep it light and loving and slowly but surely, success follows.

Toilet training isn’t just about dry pants, it’s about teaching responsibility, building trust and celebrating milestones.

At Niño & Niña, we don’t just train children, we empower them. So here’s to saying goodbye to diapers and hello to growing up, the happy and healthy way!

My little one is now completely diaper-free, and I couldn’t be more grateful!
A big thank you to Team Niño and Niña, especially Divya Ma’am and his class teacher, Shikha Ma’am, who encouraged me to send him without a diaper. Trust me, it was such a relief—and a turning point.

Every word of the article resonates with me. Now I truly understand why my child proudly says, “I did it!” every time he uses the loo.

Thank you so much, Gayatri ma’am.
We could never have imagined that Avyukt would stop wearing diapers so early. But because of your advice and encouragement, we gave it a try — and within a week, he did it! He wasn’t even 2 years old at the time, and it’s only because of your support and efforts that we were able to achieve this milestone. We are truly grateful. 🙏

Thank you so much. Till date can’t forget that I was advised by Anita didi to send Pranika diaper free when she was just 16 months old. Myself being mother was not comfortable with the idea thinking how difficult will it be for school to manage being my daughter too young.
But Divya mam herself came at gate next day saying ho jayega we will do. U just send. Pranika became diaper free so early.

No school/ pre school can be at par with you team Nino and Nina. You guys are wonderful ❤️

    With love

A heartfelt thank you to Divya Ma’am, Shikha Ma’am, and the wonderful didis for helping us kickstart this important journey! Special thanks to Shikha Ma’am for giving us the confidence to send our child diaper-free, reassuring us that the school would handle the rest—and they truly did. We were amazed at how smoothly the transition happened. Before we knew it, our child began following the same routine at home too. It’s rare to find a school that takes such genuine ownership of a child’s early development. Niño & Niña truly lives up to its diaper-free philosophy. Grateful to the entire team for making this phase feel so natural, supportive, and successful! 🙂

Although my daughter Aadvika started her formal schooling this year, I couldn’t stop myself from sharing this.
On her second day, Divya Ma’am told me not to send diapers anymore. I was a bit worried at first, but soon I noticed that Aadvika had started saying, “Mumma, I need to pee,” or “I need to go potty.”
That’s when I gave away all her diapers to our maid.

My family members often tell me that I’ve done a great job with her toilet training, but what they don’t know is that the real credit doesn’t go to me — it goes to Nino and Nina.
