One walks in with a tiny backpack, the other walks in with a heart full of questions. And somewhere between “Will my child eat?” and “Will they miss me?”—a beautiful journey begins.

Having spent years in early childhood spaces, I can assure you: preparation doesn’t begin on Day 1. It begins quietly at home, a week (or even two) before school starts.

Let’s talk about how to make this transition smoother—for both you and your little one.

1. Start With a Routine (Yes, The Sleep Battle is Real)

If your child has been sleeping at 11 pm and waking up at…well, whenever they please—it’s time for a gentle reality check.

Begin adjusting their sleep schedule at least a week before school starts. Early bedtime, early wake-up.

Because let’s be honest—no child (or adult, for that matter) thrives on crankiness and half-sleep. A well-rested child is calmer, more receptive, and far less likely to declare a dramatic protest at the school gate.

A small personal observation? The children who settle quickest are almost always the ones who walk in after a good night’s sleep. The others, let’s just say, they negotiate like seasoned lawyers.

2. Build Familiarity at Home

Preschool should not feel like a sudden plot twist.

Talk to your child about school—what it looks like, what happens there, who they might meet. Role-play simple situations:

• “Let’s pretend you’re going to school.”

• “Now say bye to mama and wave!”

You’ll be surprised how much confidence this builds.

Read picture books about school, show them photos of their classroom if available, and keep conversations light and positive. Avoid sentences like, “Don’t cry in school.” Children rarely follow negative instructions—they hear “cry” and take it as a suggestion.

3. Practice Independence (Tiny Wins Matter)

Encourage small acts of independence:

• Drinking water on their own

• Attempting to eat with minimal help

• Wearing shoes (even if they end up on the wrong feet—it’s a start!)

These little victories go a long way in making them feel capable in a new environment.

4. Prepare Yourself (Yes, This Is About You Too)

Children read emotions better than we read WhatsApp messages.

If you’re anxious, they will sense it. If you’re confident, they’ll borrow that confidence.

Trust the process. Trust the educators. And most importantly, trust your child.

I’ve often seen parents giving three hugs, four kisses, and one emotional speech at the gate—only to have the child burst into tears. Meanwhile, the parent who smiles, waves, and says a cheerful “See you soon!”—has a child who walks in with curiosity instead of fear.

5. The Niño & Niña Settling Approach: Gentle, Gradual and Full of Heart

At Niño & Niña Preschool, settling is not rushed—it is respected.

We understand that every child is different. Some walk in like they own the place. Others prefer to observe the world from the safety of a teacher’s lap (which, by the way, we happily offer).

Here’s how we make it comfortable:

• We start small: Just one hour in the initial days. No overwhelming schedules, no long separations.

• We build gradually: As the child begins to feel secure, we slowly increase their time at school.

• We provide extra support: During the settling period, we ensure additional nannies and educators are present—because one pair of hands is never enough for big emotions.

• We focus on connection first, curriculum later: Before ABCs and 123s, comes trust.

And this is where you come in.

Our entire settling process stands firmly on one foundation: your trust and our relationship with your child.

When a parent trusts us, the child senses safety. When a child feels safe, learning begins naturally.

6. Expect Emotions (And That’s Okay)

There might be tears. There might be hesitation. There might even be a dramatic “I don’t want to go!”

All of this is normal.

But here’s the reassuring truth: children are incredibly adaptable. With consistency, warmth, and the right environment, they settle faster than we expect.

The first day of preschool is not about perfection.

It’s about beginning.

A beginning where your child learns to take small steps independently.

A beginning where you learn to let go—just a little.

And somewhere between those goodbyes at the gate and stories at pick-up time, you’ll realize…

They’re not just going to school.

They’re growing up (and you’re growing with them.)

Divya Joshi

(Co-founder, Niño & Niña)

The first day of preschool is not just your child’s milestone—it’s yours too.
