A boss asks as to what is the problem and the meme says, “You.” A tough meeting happens on Monday and the joke goes, “I quit. Mental health comes first.”

We laugh, we share the reel and then we shake our heads and say, “This generation doesn’t want to work.”

But perhaps the uncomfortable truth is this:

This generation did not raise itself. Their work attitude is not appearing out of thin air. It is, in many ways, a mirror of the way we have parented them.

The Comfort Training We Mistook for Care

Somewhere along the last two decades, parenting began to focus heavily on comfort.

We told our children with genuine love, “If something makes you uncomfortable, say no immediately.”

It sounded protective. It sounded progressive.

But here is what sometimes happened next.

At twenty-three, that same child enters a workplace where a manager says, “This needs to be done by evening.” The tone may be firm, the deadline tight, and the expectations high.

The child feels discomfort.

And because discomfort was always treated as something to avoid, the response becomes withdrawal rather than endurance.

They do not think, “This is tough, let me learn.”

They think, “This environment is toxic. I should leave.”

The Negotiation Culture at Home

Another silent shift in parenting has been the negotiation culture at home.

Rules today are often discussed like boardroom agreements.

Bedtime becomes a debate.

Homework becomes a negotiation.

Family decisions become democratic discussions.

Now, open communication is wonderful. Children should absolutely be heard.

But when every rule becomes negotiable, a child slowly begins to believe that every system in life should function the same way.

Then reality arrives.

In many professions—whether it is the army, medicine, corporate structures, or government institutions—decisions often flow from the top down. There isn’t always time for discussion.

Sometimes the instruction is simply:

“This is how we’re doing it.”

For a young adult who has never practiced functioning in such a hierarchy, this can feel unfair, even oppressive.

What they are experiencing is not oppression.

It is simply structure.

The Parent as the Immediate Problem-Solver

Many parents today also step in very quickly when their child faces difficulty.

A teacher scolds the child — the parent calls the school.

A friend hurts their feelings — the parent intervenes.

An uncomfortable rule appears — the parent negotiates its removal.

The intention is always love.

But something else quietly disappears in the process: the child’s ability to sit with frustration.

Endurance is not built in comfort. It is built in small, manageable moments of difficulty.

When every rough edge of life is smoothed out for a child, the mind never develops the ability to stabilize itself.

So later, when life does become rigid or demanding, the reaction becomes protest rather than adaptation.

Boundaries vs. Humiliation

Of course, children should never be taught to tolerate humiliation, abuse, or disrespect.

That is not resilience. That is harm.

But there is a big difference between harm and discomfort.

A strict teacher.

A demanding boss.

A rule that cannot be changed.

These are not violations. They are part of learning how systems work.

Children who never practice processing such moments grow into adults who feel emotionally shaken by normal authority structures.

What Parents Can Do Differently

The answer is not to become rigid or authoritarian parents.

The answer is balance.

Sometimes a rule can be explained.

Sometimes it should simply stand.

Sometimes the parent can say gently but firmly:

“I understand you’re upset. But the decision is final.”

No long justification. No apology for having a boundary.

Allow the child to feel angry. Allow them to disagree. Allow them to sit with frustration without immediately fixing the situation.

Because that moment—uncomfortable as it may be—is where inner stability begins to form.

The Real Skill the Next Generation Needs

The world Gen Z is entering is fast, demanding, and often indifferent to personal comfort.

Success in such systems does not come from constant validation. It comes from the ability to complete tasks, manage pressure and keep going even when the tone is strict or the day feels heavy.

Resilience is not taught through speeches.

It is built quietly in childhood, one small boundary at a time.

So before we laugh at the next viral meme about Gen Z quitting after a Monday meeting, perhaps we should pause and ask a slightly uncomfortable question:

Are we laughing at them… or looking at the reflection of our own parenting?

-Divya Joshi

Cofounder, Niño & Niña Preschool

Scroll through social media today and you will find endless memes about Gen Z in the workplace.
