The child’s or the parents’?

Being both a parent and the Director of a preschool, I come across many parents who confess, “My child is on the phone for 2–3 hours every day,” or “Whenever my child is eating, the mobile is in front of them.”

Some parents even admit, “My child doesn’t eat anything… kam se kam phone dekhkar kha toh leta hai (at least the child eats while watching the mobile).”

And honestly, as a working mother, I completely understand how convenient mobile phones can feel in today’s busy routines.

At the same time, as a school director, I clearly understand the theory and witness daily practical examples of how reduced screen exposure makes a difference. Children display better focus, improved communication, stronger social interactions and growing confidence.

However, blaming parents alone is neither fair nor helpful. Parenting today comes with work pressure, busy schedules and limited support systems. This is exactly why *preschools and parents must work together* for a child’s overall well-being.

How Niño & Niña Preschool and Parents Work Together

To reduce children’s dependence on mobile phones, it is important that at home and Niño & Niña we follow the same approach.

1. At Niño & Niña Preschool N Daycare, we follow a screen-free daily routine for children.

At home, we request parents to encourage structured activities without using mobile phones.

2. At Niño & Niña, learning is play-based and hands-on.

At home, parents can involve children in toys, books, drawing, puzzles and simple activities instead of screens.

3. At Niño & Niña, we strongly believe that meal time should be family time.

At home, we encourage families to keep meal times completely screen-free and enjoy conversations together.

4. At Niño & Niña, we maintain fixed routines for sleep, play and learning.

At home, parents can support this by following regular bedtimes and wake-up times.

5. At Niño & Niña, children get daily opportunities for outdoor play and physical movement.

At home, ensure children spend time outdoors instead of on mobile phones

6. At Niño & Niña, we believe in mindful and realistic screen habits.

At home, keep a fixed and limited screen time at a specific time of the day so children learn balance rather than dependency.

7. At Niño & Niña, we consciously act as role models.

At home, limiting adult screen use in front of children makes a powerful impact.

Together, Niño & Niña and parents can create a balanced environment where children grow through real-life experiences, healthy routines, and meaningful connections—rather than excessive screen time.

Jyoti Lekhwani

Director, Niño & Niña Preschool

Sector 130

In almost every household today, a common scene plays out: a child holding a mobile phone, watching nonstop games and scrolling through endless reels—slowly turning into a daily habit and eventually an addiction.
