The reasons run deeper—and yes, parenting patterns and screen time play starring roles.

The Real Reasons Behind Picky Eating

Let’s start at home, because that’s where habits are born (and sometimes pampered a little too lovingly).

1. Screens at Mealtime

One episode becomes two, two become “just finish this bite”, and before you know it, the child has eaten half a meal without even realising what they ate. Screens disconnect children from hunger cues, textures, and tastes. Food becomes background noise—literally.

2. Short-Order Cooking

“I won’t eat this.”

“Okay, I’ll make something else.”

Repeat. Forever.

Children quickly learn that refusal equals replacement. Why eat vegetables when a sandwich or noodles will magically appear?

3. Grazing All Day

Biscuits here, juice there, chips everywhere. When mealtime arrives, the child is already “full”—just not nourished.

4. Pressure, Bribes & Drama

“Five bites and I’ll give you chocolate.”

Food becomes a negotiation, not nourishment. Children sense stress faster than we sense burnt toast.

What We Do at Niño & Niña (And Trust Me, It’s Not Easy)

At school feeding children is not a task—it’s a process.

• We provide a balanced breakfast and lunch, planned thoughtfully with variety, nutrition, and child-friendly portions.

• Each meal is given a full 30 minutes—no rushing, no forcing.

• Educators sit with children, encourage them, talk to them, and gently guide them.

• The focus is clear: the child eats the meal, not just touches it or stares at it suspiciously.

Sounds ideal? It is.

Sounds easy? Absolutely not.

The Daily Challenges We Face

Let me be honest (educationist honesty, not Instagram honesty).

• Some children come with a habit of eating only while watching a screen.

• Some refuse food simply because it looks “different”.

• Some wait, hoping that if they don’t eat, something better might arrive (spoiler: it doesn’t).

• Some are used to being fed only by one specific adult, in one specific way, with one specific spoon.

Our educators show extraordinary patience—encouraging without forcing, motivating without bribing and persisting without pressure. But this consistency takes time, energy and teamwork.

How We Handle It at School

• We model eating behaviour—children eat better when they see others eating.

• We use positive language: “Let’s try,” instead of “You must.”

• We don’t label children as “fussy”; we label them as learning.

• We celebrate small wins—two spoons today can become half a bowl tomorrow.

I’ve personally seen children who refused everything except plain rice slowly start eating vegetables—because they weren’t pressured, entertained or bribed. Just patiently guided.

What Can Be Done at Home (And Please, This Is Where We Need You)

Here’s how parents can become true partners in this journey:

• No Screens During Meals

Let food be the main event, not background music.

• Fixed Meal Timings

Avoid constant snacking. Hunger is a powerful (and natural) motivator.

• Eat Together

Children copy what they see. If you eat balanced meals, they are more likely to try.

• One Meal for All

You decide what is served; the child decides how much to eat.

• Be Patient, Not Panicky

Children don’t starve themselves. They eventually eat—when habits are right.

Partnership Is the Secret Ingredient

At Niño & Niña, we can do our best within school hours—but food habits don’t grow in isolation. When school and home send mixed signals, children get confused.

We request parents to trust the process, support the routine and reinforce at home what we practice at school. Consistency is the real superfood here.

Because raising healthy eaters isn’t about one perfect meal—it’s about daily, boring, repetitive patient habits. And yes, sometimes a lot of deep breathing.

Together, we can turn picky eaters into confident little diners—one spoon at a time.

-Divya Joshi

Co-Founder, Niño & Niña,

If parenting came with a warning label, one line would definitely read: “Feeding your child may test your patience, creativity and sanity.” Welcome to the era of picky eaters, where a child who happily ate dal yesterday looks personally offended by it today.
