However, nothing quite prepares you for the linguistic rollercoaster that modern-day WhatsApp communication holds. Yes, dear readers, today we’re diving into the murky waters of incorrect punctuation usage, a phenomenon as perplexing as a toddler’s tantrum over mismatched socks.

First, let’s talk about the most infamous offender: the triple question mark. A seemingly innocent string of “???” can make even the most seasoned educators blood pressure spike. Picture this: you receive a message from a parent, “Why is my child not eating his breakfast???” Now, I understand the concern about a child’s nutritional habits, but are three question marks really necessary? The implication of urgency verges on hysteria, making it seem like an imminent food-based catastrophe.

Let’s break down what these excessive punctuation marks convey. Three question marks together don’t just ask a question—they scream it, as if standing on a table with a microphone. They imply impatience, confusion or even passive aggression. It’s the punctuation equivalent of honking your horn in traffic because the car ahead didn’t accelerate the instant the light turned green.

And it’s not just question marks. Exclamation marks suffer a similar fate. “Great job!!!” sounds less like genuine praise and more like a drill sergeant commending a cadet for correctly tying their shoelaces. It’s as though we’ve collectively forgotten that one exclamation mark is perfectly capable of conveying excitement or enthusiasm.

As an educationist, it’s particularly challenging to overlook these punctuation confusion. Every misused apostrophe or misplaced comma triggers an involuntary mental red pen, underlining and circling the errors with an emotion only educators can understand. It’s difficult to take off my teacher hat when reading, “Can you send the story book today??? My child is waiting!!!” The inner grammarian in me screams silently, clutching an imaginary set of correction tools.

To be clear, I understand that people aren’t purposely trying to irk the grammar police within me. Many are simply trying to convey their urgency or emotions in the limited confines of a text message. However, this misuse of punctuation can lead to misunderstandings and, quite frankly, unnecessary stress. It’s like receiving an email in ALL CAPS—intense and a little bit shouty.

So, how do we combat this punctuation confusion? Here are a few tips:

1. Less is More: One question mark or exclamation mark is usually sufficient. Trust in their ability to convey your point without the need for reinforcements.

2. Punctuation Practice: Just as our preschoolers practice writing letters, we can all benefit from brushing up on our punctuation. There’s no harm in revisiting the basics.

3. Mindful Messaging: Consider how your message might be received. Could it be interpreted as overly intense or demanding? A little reflection goes a long way.

While the world of WhatsApp communication may be full with punctuation pitfalls, a little awareness and restraint can help us navigate these waters smoothly. Remember, good punctuation is like good manners—often unnoticed but always appreciated. So next time you’re tempted to unleash a torrent of question marks or exclamation points, take a deep breath and ask yourself: is this really necessary?

Divya Joshi

Co founder Niño & Niña Preschool

As an educationist and co-founder of a preschool, I’ve come to embrace a variety of challenges: managing energetic toddlers, crafting engaging curriculums and navigating the ever-evolving challenges of early childhood education.
